It's rare that a group manages to inject something really new into the genre of the Christmas/winter season album, but the Quadriga Consort does so here. The basic musical material is novel and appealing enough: a mixture of traditional melodies from England, Scotland, Ireland, France, and even Nova Scotia, a few well known, but mostly new for average listeners (and the Gaelic-language ones are left untranslated). But what's really striking are the arrangements, by director and keyboardist Nikolaus Newerkla, who also composed a pair of individual pieces. The ensemble itself, consisting of voice, recorders, low strings, and keyboard, is unremarkable, although the vibrandoneon (a melodica-like instrument) played by Newerkla is something new. It's what's done with the instruments and the melodies that will be unlike anything you've heard before. It's hard to pick out a single piece to sample because the charm of this music lies in the variety of treatments, but plunge in with the opening The First Nowell, with its mixture of modes. That's typical in that Newerkla has rethought every single piece (often the rethinking is rhythmic, with the harpsichord playing an utterly unfamiliar role), but has done so in such a way as to remain true to the medieval and traditional origins of the songs. You'll feel not only that you've never heard such a thing before, but also somehow that it makes perfect sense. The extraordinary sound from Deutsche Harmonia Mundi (from the Salzhof in the Upper Austrian town of Freistadt) is an added attraction, as is the ethereal singing of South African pop vocalist Elisabeth Kaplan (who has since left the group). Winter's Delights indeed, and a major release in its field.
