The Trio in D minor is certainly one of Mendelssohn’s most successful and popular works, and with reason. Its genesis was not a simple affair and in its initial state was found somewhat lacking in originality and flamboyance by Mendelssohn’s good friend, Ferdinand Hiller. The final version completed on the 23rd September 1839 gave a greater importance to the piano part, and here Mendelssohn incorporated his own qualities as a pianist in the part: great finger virtuosity, brilliance, impetuosity, and a romantic “gonghu” that is irresistible. Robert Schumann in his review of the work in 1840 declared Mendelssohn to be the “Mozart of the 19th century, the most illuminating of musicians.” Schumann surely studied this work with profit, for his own his first piano trio, op. 63, composed some eight years later and also in D minor is the testimony.
