保罗·麦克里希(Paul McCreesh)于1960年5月24日出生于英国伦敦,在曼彻斯特大学念书的时候就创办演奏室内乐合唱团与古乐器的小型乐团,1982年扩编为嘉布里耶利合奏团(Gabrieli Consort & Players),以演奏文艺复兴与巴洛克时期作品为主。由于保罗·麦克里希对17-18世纪音乐的深入研究和多次演奏试验,扩编后的嘉布里耶利合奏团除演出文艺复兴与巴罗克时代作品外,也涉猎18世纪“变革”时期的音乐作品。他们的演奏往往能为作品注入全新而且丰富的创造力与情感,因此在国际乐坛声名鹊起。
三幕清唱剧《所罗门》HWV67,作于1749年。此剧是亨德尔众多宗教清唱剧中的一部,是亨德尔63岁晚年的作品。此剧是在圣经故事的基础上创作而成的,讲的是所罗门王判断两个母亲孰真孰假的案子,其中摘取了所罗门一生的的几个重要事件。所罗门是以色列最伟大的国王.所罗门继大卫继承王位后,一个接一个地消灭仇敌,并通过联姻方式加强自己地位。清唱剧《所罗门》,讲述的就是这个国王的传奇故事。虽然它并不是今日大部分人所熟悉的亨德尔神剧,但是对日后亨德尔歌剧和神剧在二十世纪后半叶的复兴起到了很大的贡献作用。
清唱剧与歌剧的演唱有些区别,歌剧演出通常着重于戏剧冲突的张力,因此表演者较为突出情感的表现,甚至还借此卖弄一下演唱技巧。但是清唱剧的演出则偏向于弥撒曲的风格,要求乐手唱出对神的崇敬之情,因此歌手的表演也较为端庄平和。
