六十年代开始，以披头士为首的“嬉皮士”掀起了“英伦入侵”运动，并且在六十年代末将之推向了高潮。虽然那个时期英伦音乐占据了主流摇滚地位，但是美国的地下摇滚也对后世影响极大。按照区域大致分为纽约地区和西海岸地区（有点像国内的北京摇滚与西北摇滚的区分方式）。而纽约地下音乐与西海岸的音乐相比更加先锋艺术化。本营格林威治村（Greenwich Village,也叫西村），一个是前卫艺术的聚集区东村（East Village），还有一个是痞子流氓流浪汉的聚集的布鲁克林区。（特别像曾经北京的树村，霍营。物以类聚是非常有道理的）。这支乐队可能大部分听摇滚的人都知道，来自纽约地下音乐圈的The Velvet Underground （地下丝绒）。
首先，1962年，著名的波普艺术领袖Andy Warhol（安迪·沃霍尔）在纽约创立了工作室——The Factory,这是一个以他为首的，号称 Warhol superstars 的一群艺术家、艺人的聚会、创作基地。David Bowie,Bob Dylan和滚石的Mick Jagger和Brian Jones等等音乐人经常混迹于此。
1965年The Velvet Underground成立，乐队的核心人物为Lou Reed和John cale。经过介绍，Andy Warhol成为他们的经济人，并且成为The factory的重要成员。1966年，Andy Warhol举办多媒体演出Exploding Plastic Inevitable。这成为地下丝绒在初组年代最重要的演出。
经常在The Factory混的还有一位资深骨肉皮，Nico。不过假如按照现在对于骨肉皮的标准看待她又非常不对。事实上她是一位很有艺术天分的歌手，同时也是一位时装模特与演员。Nico由Bob Dylan引荐给Andy Warhol，Andy让她来主演他和Paul Morrisey的实验电影。Nico告诉Andy她想唱歌，于是在Andy Warhol的建议下，The Velvet Underground接纳了Nico担任乐队的女主音。
1967年3月12日， The Velvet Underground & Nico发行划时代著名专辑《The Velvet Underground & Nico》，封面由Andy Warhol设计。这张俗称为“大香蕉”的专辑，因为太过先锋性，发行五年都只有3万张的销量。然而在滚石杂志评出的500张最伟大唱片中它排名第13，笔者认为它与排名第1的披头士那张“佩铂军士孤独之心俱乐部”相比更具有创新实验性。“佩铂”直接影响的是迷幻摇滚与艺术摇滚。而“大香蕉”中Lou Reed搞的实验噪音就是早期朋克与金属的原型。Brian Eno 说，每个买了这3万张拷贝中的一张的，都组了一个乐队。这句话虽然有点夸张，但不能否认这张专辑在对于朋克，后朋克，黑暗氛围音乐，噪音音乐等等都有影响力。由于专辑在当时商业上的无作为，之后没有多久Nico就被踢出了乐队，Lou Reed也和Andy Warhol闹掰，解除了Andy经纪人的合约。
虽然Nico被踢出乐队，但其实在“大香蕉”专辑之前，她就已经开始走她自己的路了。Lou Reed和John Cale因为她而互相嫉妒的时候，Nico已在传奇性的Dom Club唱歌了。 Nico长长的催眠般单调的嗓音很有特点，被称为“Nico From the Grave Look”的低声呻吟。同年10月，Nico发行了第一张个人专辑《Chelsea Girl》，这是一张偏流行与民谣的专辑，挺好听的。John Cale 和Lou Reed都有给她写歌并演奏，专辑中还有 Bob Dylan 为她写的歌曲《I’ll Keep It With Mine》。
1968年，The Velvet Underground发行划时代著名专辑《White Light/White Heat》。滚石500唱片排名第293。这张专辑更加实验暴躁，因此有人认为这张专辑对朋克，后朋克，Grunge,实验摇滚的影响比第一张专辑大的多。之后，John Cale因为和Lou Reed理念不合而离队。
1969年，The Velvet Underground发行著名专辑《The Velvet Underground》。滚石500唱片排第314。这张专辑全部由Lou Reed创作，John Cale离队后替补进来的是Doug Yule，也就是他演唱了专辑中的著名歌曲《Candy Says》。风格上，这张专辑更民谣旋律化一些，少了之前作品的实验暴躁。可以看出来乐队前两张专辑中比较甜美的旋律部分来自Lou Reed，而比较暴躁实验的部分则来自John Cale。
1970年，The Velvet Underground重新签约了Atlantic Records，因此风格也转向更加流行化的尝试，这一年发行了专辑《Loaded》，其中的代表作有《Sweet Jane》和《Rock & Roll》。尽管后来的历史证明地下丝绒对后世乐队的影响非常巨大，但当时却完全称不上成功。由于专辑一直卖的并不好，乐队前途堪忧，Lou Reed在《Loaded》从发行之前就退出了乐队。随后，1973年，地下丝绒又发行了一张专辑《Squeeze》，但这时原班人马已经一个都不在了。乐队随之解散。
John Cale离开之后，也在1970年发行了自己的第一张专辑，《Vintage Violence》，然而评价非常一般。
1973年，John Cale发行了专辑《Paris 1919》，这张流行化的专辑获得了多方面的好评。不过他最重要的作品显然是74、75两年连续发行的《Fear》，《Slow Dazzle》和《Helen of Troy》，被当做朋克时代的开端。自从离开地下丝绒后，他同时与很多著名乐队，如Patti Smith，Sham69等进行合作。一直到2012年，他都在坚持一直在尝试创作各种高质量的前卫作品。
1975年Lou Reed发行了《Metal Machine Music》，1987年，Andy Warhol在纽约去世，享年58岁。为了纪念Andy, 1990年，John Cale和Lou Reed重新走到一起，发行了概念专辑《Songs For Drella》。1993年，解散多年的原成员们重新走到一起，进行了一场欧洲巡演，并出版了一张现场录音专辑。
2013年，Lou Reed因肝脏移植手术并发症离世。一代传奇最终落幕，留下的是供后世传承的才华和音乐灵感。很多人说，地下丝绒拯救了摇滚的生命。几乎每一位朋克、后朋克和先锋流行艺术家们都曾经受到过或间接收到过他们的影响。在那个花与和平的后嬉皮年代，地下丝绒是反潮流的，他们更冷静，更黑暗，更现实，他们给摇滚乐带来了自省的态度。David Bowie、Brian Eno、Patti Smith以及那些全部从CBGB俱乐部毕业的70年代的朋克乐手，还有The Cars、The Pretenders、Joy Division-New Order、U2、REM、Sonic Youth，如果没有地下丝绒，也许就没有当代摇滚乐竞相绽放的景象。
