英国流行音乐界总是人才辈出，自上世纪90年代的“Brit-pop”大潮逐渐散去之后，英国独立音乐与主流音乐的界限正在被更多的年轻乐队打破，他们不仅保持着前辈乐队在音乐创作方面的原创性，而且正在将更多元化的音乐元素融合到自己的音乐当中，以求得在更加广泛的范围内制造成功。Muse无疑就是这些英国新乐队当中的佼佼者。MUSE于1994年在英国德文郡的Teignmouth镇创立。乐风融合了独立摇滚、前卫摇滚、重金属音乐、古典音乐与电音。在Muse的这三位成员刚刚聚到一起开始正式组乐队的时候，他们都只有13岁。在不同时期，他们共用过Gothic Plague，Fixed Penalty和Rocket Baby Dolls做过乐队名。
乐团以主唱马修·贝拉米(Matthew Bellamy)对各种阴谋论、外星生物、神学以及末世预言等的怪异兴趣著称。三位成员分别为：马修·贝拉米(主唱、吉他手和键盘手)、多米尼克·霍华德( Dominic Howard)(鼓手和打击乐乐手)以及克里斯·沃尔斯滕霍姆(Chris Wolstenholme)(贝司手兼键盘、合音)。贝拉米是主要的歌曲作者，同时也是乐队的灵魂人物，近来沃尔斯滕霍姆和霍华德参与创作的份量也逐渐增加。出了第四张专辑后，摩根·尼可斯(Morgan Nicholls)在现场演唱会担任固定班底，负责键盘、取样与合音。
1997年，乐队由Rocket Baby Dolls正式更名为Muse，并在Dangerous Records发行首张同名EP《Muse》。1998年，Muse又发行了一张EP唱片《Muscle Museum》。此时，Muse开始得到英国评论界和歌迷的一致好评。在参加完当年纽约的CMJ音乐节之后，Muse与Maverick Records正式签约。
随后，Muse的单曲《Cave》和《Uno》在正式专辑之前率先发行。1999年末，Muse乐队的首张录音室专 辑《Showbiz》正式发行。两年之后，Muse的第二张专辑《The Origin of Symmetry》面世，其中的单曲《Hyper Music》大受欢迎。2002年6月，Muse发行了双张现场专辑《Hullabaloo Soundtrack》。2003年9月，乐队第四张专辑《Absolution》在英国发行。2004年3月，《Absolution》通过 Warner Bros. 在美国发 行。2004年初，为了赢得美国市场，Muse在美国举行了一次小型巡演。同年5月，Muse还参加了第五届Coachella音乐与艺术节。2006年 7月，Muse第五张专辑《Black Holes and Revelations》正式发行。在发行后首周，《Black Holes and Revelations》便成功在英国专辑榜中夺冠，成为Muse连续第二张英国榜的冠军专辑。在Billboard 200专辑榜中，《Black Holes and Revelations》首周上榜排在第九位，创造了Muse乐队在美国的muse最好成绩。
